Description
Up for auction is an Icelandic volcanic lava vase from the "Old Glit" period, most likely between 1968 and 1971, a time when German ceramicist Gerhard Schwarz had taken over the artistic leadership at the pottery. Glit was founded in 1958 under the artistic direction of sculptor Ragnar Kjartansson & became an important experimental training ground for Scandinavian ceramic artists of that time. The vase has a matt mottled brown satin glaze (very much like the color tone of the iconic Ruska pottery by Arabia Finland) with thick applied volcanic lava around its middle and a lavender purple glaze on the inside.
It is in excellent / mint condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
The vase is approximately 8 1/2 inches tall, has a baluster shape with a top diameter of 3 1/2 inches & approx. 4 1/2 inches in the widest part. See pictures. They are part of the description. The colors are a little darker than depicted.
