Danish MCM Stoneware: Soholm, Bornholm, Studio Vase, Beautiful Haresfur GlazeThe Søholm factory began its business in 1835 producing Bornholm faience and pottery. Much of the production was
unsigned - and thus today anonymous. After Søholm's founder Herman Wolffsen, it was Hans Ancher Wolffsen who
operated the factory with his brother from 1887 to 1908.
In 1908, the Wolffsen family handed over the day-to-day management of the factory to the ceramicist Carl Møller. He bought Søholm in 1912, but the difficulties of the First World War caused him to sell the company to a Copenhagen wholesaler in 1919, while remaining as manager. I
n 1929, the municipality of Rønne bought the factory, a partnership of "Holst & Knudsen" and the Ceramic Association rented the business and took over the operation of the factory, but bought the factory by the municipality in 1933.
From 1929 the factory was run as a trade union owned business.
The factory was owned by the Ceramic Federation in Denmark until 1988, and from then on by SiD, the Specialist Workers' Union in Denmark.
This elegant vase with a rounded mouth is an outstanding example of Soholm MCM studio stoneware. This piece, with a soft light brown and blue mottled glaze, likely dates from the 1950s or 1960s. The piece is well-marked, with hand-incised "S
øholm Stentøj Denmark", indicating that this is a limited production or unik piece, rather than serial production.
The dimensions of the piece are 3.25 inches high and approximately 3.5 inches wide at the shoulder.
This piece is in excellent original condition with no observed flaws.
Please see the photos for more details on the condition of this piece.
